Songs About Deja Vu

Deja Vu - Best of The 80s

When you first start listening to a new song, there’s an in-between period of its shaping memory. The rhythms and lyrics are familiar, but not rotely summonable. A song will always sound most magical then. “Deja Vu, ” from Post Malone’s upcoming Stoney, is that sensation distilled. Perhaps that’s because it sounds a lot like another song you know very well, “Hotline Bling.” The likeness of the two songs’ beats could be the déjà vu in question, though lyrically “Deja Vu” is much cuter: “Tell me is that déjà vu/Because you want me and I want you.” With the repeated listens the song begs for, “Deja Vu”’s rhythms and lyrics begin to solidify—the echoed coo in the chorus, the half strum of the guitar as punctuation. Post Malone has this anxious little warble happening that makes his inherent corniness a sweet thing. Justin Bieber is as buttery as ever. There are four producers listed, too, and you can imagine this thing has been Frankensteined together in a perfect pop song lab. Is it bad that it worked? We’ve heard it before, but also we haven’t.
